Many diet plans highlight added more fresh fruit to your diet and buying in season is always the best choice. I remember picking blackberries off the bushes around the corn fields of my grandparent’s farm as a young girl. They are so good right off the bush, but at this time of year, it’s pretty close so enjoy.
Blackberries (raw) are:
- very low in calories & fat
- a great source of Vitamin C
- a great source of fiber
- have no cholesterol
- are very low in sodium content
One cup of blackberries is about 62 calories, so you can really go to town on these and not feel guilty. Try out these blackberry ideas:
- Add blackberries to your oatmeal, cereal or yogurt in the mornings
- Make a fresh blackberry smoothie
- Blackberries in a salad with fat free feta cheese and light balsamic dressing…Yum!
- Blackberry sauce (put blackberries in a pot over medium heat with a little water and stir until they are the right consistency) You can also add a little sweetener but right now they are in season so you shouldn’t need anything. Pour the sauce over … everything. So good.
- Blackberries with light cream for dessert
Blackberry calories are low and the nutritional gain is high so enjoy these while you can as part of your healthy eating plan!
