Organ fat is the fat that lies deep in your body and surrounds the organs of your peritoneal cavity. It is also called visceral fat and sometimes abdominal or belly fat. This organ fat has been the subject of a lot of study recently because of the number of diseases it seems to play a role in causing.
Belly Fat – What Is So Wrong With It?
Organ fat has been implicated in:
- Breast Cancer
- Colorectral cancer
- Heart Disease
- High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)
- Metabolic syndrome
- Diabetes
- Gallbladder disease
This is mostly because these adipose cells are actually quite active and produce things that can cause insulin resistance and hormones like estrogen. This makes it quite different from subcutaneous fat which is found directly below our skin and works more as a protective barrier for our bodies.
Do You Know If You Have Too Much Organ Fat?
Get ready to start measuring. There are a variety of numbers obtained from different sources, but the general consensus is anything above 33-35 inches for females and 40 inches for males is considered an unhealthy level of belly fat. Get a tape measure and wrap it around your waist, placing it near your belly button. Breathe normal and relax without sucking in or holding the tape measure too tight up against your skin.
Belly Fat- What Should You Do If You Have Too Much?
If you discover that you are in a risk category, there are some things you can try to get rid of abdominal fat. Whole body movements like cardio will reduce visceral fat. Locate a solid program like Truth About Abs that focuses on good nutrition and a strong exercise plan to get rid of that belly fat for good.

Remember visceral fat is deeper withing the abdomen and the fat you can see, the “muffin top” or the “pudge” is probably subcutaneous fat. At your height and weight, you probably don’t have too much of an issue with visceral fat unless you are not exercising. What is your workout routine?
